Care for or cut split ends, that is the question

It is, without a doubt, one of the eternal conflicts: is it better to care for or cut off split ends? If you have a scissor phobia then this article may interest you. How many times have you cursed split ends? After hair loss, it’s one of our hair’s worst enemies. These unfortunate split tips have the effect of making your hair look uncared for, damaged and dry. We all know that there’s an easy way to get rid of them with some help from a pair of scissors, but… is there another solution to avoid this drastic measure? To give you the answer to this question first we need to understand what split ends are and when they appear.

What are split ends?

They’re an alteration of the hair caused by scaling of the cuticle. Although this scaling can be caused by both environmental and mechanical factors, the most common cause is down to a lack of hydration which causes lost vitality. Another possible cause that can endanger the hair’s health is an inappropriate use of a hair dryer or iron. That’s why, it’s essential to use a heat protector like our Straightening Spray, which creates a protective film that, aside from just protecting, makes straightening easier and longer-lasting. Even then, there are times when our hair ends become damaged, especially XL manes, where the extra long hair makes it even harder for nourishing oils to work from root to end. And now you’re probably asking yourself: what does it depend upon? Well, it depends on whether your body is producing the right essential oils in the right quantity that your hair needs to stay healthy.

Cut or care for split ends?

Before making a decision you should understand that the tip of the hair is the most damaged area, it’s the area that first appeared before the rest of the hair shaft and because its cuticle (the hair’s outer layer which protects it from external damage) is more porous and so is more easily broken. Cutting this damaged area is the definitive solution for improving the hair’s appearance but you should remember that, on the contrary to what you might think, it doesn’t mean that your hair will grow faster, it will simply eliminate the already damaged part of the hair. Cutting the hair’s ends will in no way stimulate growth or hair follicle regeneration, the hair’s ends are not an active part of the hair.   If, on the other hand, you’re determined to show off beautiful without a trace of split ends, your aim should be to prevent them appearing in the first place. To reach this goal you will need to care for your hair with intensive hydrating products that stimulate regeneration. Your wash bag must contain a good shampoo, that ticks all the boxes when it comes to hair nutrition such as our Moisturizing Shampoo from the Biokera Natura range. Formulated with natural wheat germ oil, it offers a balance between effective cleaning power that’s gentle on skin. It’s the ideal solution for hair that is dry or dehydrated as it progressively normalizes hydration and improves hair manageability, softness and shine. Your hair care routine must not be missing a keratin cream capable of regenerating and nourishing the ends before they split or to prevent the condition worsening, such as Keratin Shot Cream, a rehydrating treatment with a hair smoothing effect which provides the hair with natural keratin to restore natural hydration levels. One of our star products should not be forgotten either, the Salerm 21 hair conditioning mask. It’s so much more than just a hydrating conditioner or leave-in treatment, it’s formula based on silk proteins reaches the hair’s core, caring and reviving hair from the very first use.

My hair is already damaged, what should I do?

If you’re already too late then you’re going to need to use a fast-acting treatment mask for damaged hair several times a day. In this case we recommend Deep Impact Plus mask from the Keratin Shot range, a deep-acting treatment mask which provides extreme softness, radical shine and multi-level hair care and repair. The Hi Repair mask can also be of great help to you, with its instant-action rebuilding properties capable of restoring a correct balance to dehydrated hair with damage to the cortex’s internal structures and also a lack of nutrients. Another option you can use is to change your hairstyle or styling technique to renew your hair’s appearance. If none of these things work for you and your hair feels dry, frizzy, brittle and hard to manage, then it’s time to cut. This should ideally be done every 2-3 months if you want that beautiful mane you’ve always dreamed of and deserve.
