How can I tell if my hair is oily, dry or mixed and how can I take better care of it?

For beautiful and healthy hair, we can choose from a multitude of treatments. And understanding your hair is essential when it comes to choosing the most suitable hair care routine for you. Find out how to treat your hair according to its needs and adjust your hair care routine after consultation with your stylist.

Discover your hair type: oily, dry or mixed

The hair’s condition is the result of multiple factors: genetics, hormones, nutrition, stress, care products, pollution... Identifying if our hair is oily, dry or mixed can be complex, but it is important since it will determine our most suitable hair care routine.

Characteristics of oily hair

Oily hair is characterized by an excess production of sebum. Sebum is an important lipid for the health of our hair, since it protects the scalp’s internal structure and prevents the moisture locked inside hair from evaporating. However, the excessive segregation of this lipid by the sebaceous glands results in greasy and dull hair. Oily hair tends to easily attract dirt and favors the appearance of dandruff.

Characteristics of dry hair

Dry hair suffers from a lack of hydration and nutrition. This type of hair does not produce the amount of sebum necessary to protect the hair fiber, causing moisture to evaporate and the hair to appear dry, frizzy and with split ends. In addition, it tends to break more easily.

Characteristics of mixed hair

Combination hair is usually difficult to diagnose, since it is often confused with oily hair. Mixed hair is one that, although the roots get greasy quickly, looks dull and lifeless from the middle to the ends. By considering two opposing needs, the treatment of this type of hair is usually more complex. We should not treat it in the same way as oily hair so as not to further punish the ends.

Once identified... what do I do if I have oily hair?

There are specific treatments for each type of hair. The choice of a treatment that maintains the hair’s optimum balance is in our hands. With the advice of a stylist, it's easy to learn which products work best for you and how to apply them correctly.

If I have oily hair, what shampoo can I use?

In the case of oily hair, we recommend the Specific Oily Shampoo from the Biokera Natura line. Its formula with yeast extract provides sebum-regulating properties that control sebum production.

For complete and intensive action, it is advisable to combine with two more products:

- Specific Oily Hair Mask: conditions, strengthens the hair fiber and regulates oil production.

- Intensive Oily Hair Treatment: with proteins and amino acids that prevent excess oiliness and keep hair clean for longer.

How should I wash my hair if it is oily?

Washing oily hair should be gentle and without intense massage so as not to stimulate the sebaceous glands. In this way, we will avoid favoring excessive sebum production.

How many times a week can I wash it?

With oily hair, it may be necessary to wash frequently (daily or every two days). However, the key to reversing this problem is consistent use of the specific oily hair treatment. To begin with, we need to apply the complete treatment twice a week for an intensive action. After the first two months, and depending on the results obtained, we can reduce use to once a week for maintenance.
