Californianas, baby light, balayage, ombré… Every day we hear about new hair color techniques that will help our hair look fabulous, but not all of them may suit us. How can you know which ones will suit you best? We reveal all here.
The hairdressing sector is, without a doubt, one of the most innovative there is. Every day we hear about new techniques and hair colors that can help us get the best out of our hair, but the majority of them are not suitable for just any type of hair. Babylights, Balayage, Cold brew, Ombré, Californian… how can you know which will suit you best? It all depends on three things: your hair’s base color, your skin tone and your personal style. Based on these three things we answer your specific questions that will help you decide which hair color technique will turn your hair from boring to brilliant. Pay attention!
Skin color
As we already mentioned, skin color is a determining factor when it comes to choosing one technique over another. This is why, take note: almost all skin tones are suited to one or other type of highlights. The most important thing is the hair’s base color, as very dark hair can suffer a lot to achieve very light tones.
Length
Yes, length is important. Techniques which use color fade, such as balayage or Californian highlights, need a minimum length to work (at least chin length or longer) and get a natural looking finish. These just won’t really work on short hair.
Hair color
Here we need to remember that for highlights to look natural they should be two tones lighter that the base color and three tones lighter at the hair’s tips. This way we can create a volume-boosting effect. Although blondes and light browns are best suited to this type of hair color, brunettes are not totally out of the picture.
For example, balayage highlights can look great on a dark brown base, the key is in the highlight tone used. If we’re working from a blonde base, then the balayage applied will be even lighter, if the base is dark the balayage tones should be hazelnut or honey. If hair is copper, the best option is to combine with coppery highlights to neck length then follow up by blending with lighter tones. Yes, that’s right! Balayage can look good on you too! If your base is black you can combine your base color with some gentle and well-spaced-out highlights. Although it may seem contradictory, this technique will give a more natural feel and create an amazing finish! If you don’t want too much contrast then, you can always use chocolate brown to create a spot-on color blend.
Highlights and gray
If your hair is naturally blonde then it’ll be easier. If your hair is dark then you’re better off applying hair color first then following up with highlights afterwards.
Illumination
How many highlights do you need to enhance your skin tone? Although it will depend on the base color, sometimes just a few highlights around the face and in a few other areas will be enough.
Highlights vs. lowlights
So what is the difference between highlights and lowlights? Well it’s basically just as it sounds. The first are done using a color lighter than the natural base and the second use a color that is darker.
